Updates:
My hope is to include something in the monthly update that can help us all grow. Each update will most likely include at a minimum will include the following 3 areas:
- Links - These are things I’ve(or others) have found in the last month that can help teach a new concept, express an idea, etc.
- Book of the month - I am 35, and only in the last few years have I truly come to realize how amazing the cheat code books are, in a few hours/days you can read/listen to the insights/thoughts/research that took an author months/years to consolidate.
- Cool historical fact - "Standing on the shoulders of giants” is one of my favorite all time quotes(often attributed to Isaac Newton), there is so much value in the work done by those who’ve gone before us and the inspiration/advice/guidance they have should never be discounted due to it being done in the past.
If you have contributions/ideas/suggestions/complaints please don’t hesitate to reach out.

- https://www.ll.mit.edu/sites/default/files/page/doc/2018-05/18_1_4_Metzger.pdf Matt Williams sent this to me as it was in the same scope of things he was working in before. I’d certainly encourage you to read this write up, and pick his brain on this type of thing if you are interested in it. Nothing increases knowledge as quickly as a bit of time talking to someone who’s been there, done that.
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8DybBlX55k Prusa is a cool company based around making 3D printers(we have a couple in the back stock room you can check out). One of the best take aways from this video is their desire to have everyone under the same roof regardless of what they were working on to help build unity and how that’s been a focus of ours(Outpost) for the same reason. Also it’s awesome how they highlight all areas of this large company and show how they help contribute to their ultimate success.
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTMlIvt_CDY This is a very cool project, it reminds me of the early days of hobbyist 3D printing. There are not many wire EDM machines out there, and even fewer in this form factor.
- https://youtu.be/UQ6ueTe8KQM?si=JMxehv-PJ03_04CA This is a neat video that combines PC building and hidden compartment furniture making. Some very cool mechanism design went into this.
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9rClZrbnrQ Just gonna go ahead and say it, I’ll always post one of the Stuff Made Here’s project videos in this update as he does a fantastic job showing the process of planning/designing/building/testing/improving.
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKnAQMUWnJI Good tool organization is something that I’ve always really enjoyed and thought this was a cool look at the way the ISS’s tools are stored
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJzy1vk2zyc Finally this is a well shot video of a truly overengineered tea timer, lots of pretty machining footage
Book of the month
- “What if? (and what if? 2)” by Randall Munroe, Randall Munroe is probably best known for his math/science heavy web comic strip https://xkcd.com/ and much in keeping with that comic strip his books are full of totally off the wall random questions, like how many pigeons to lift you to the top of a skyscraper(the answers is enough that they would have more gravity than earth) or how long would it take you to drive to edge of the solar system. Great source of random trivia that you’ll never need, but no doubt reciting will make you the life of the party. If you want to read some of these awesome questions please don’t hesitate to swing by my office and grab either “what if?” or “what if? 2” from my bookshelf and enjoy the read.
